“What does 5G mean for Shared VR?”

It’s a question clients are asking with increasing frequency. And for good reason. Because 5G promises to have a revolutionary impact on the way Shared VR content is produced, accessed, manipulated and distributed.

But, along with all the potential comes quite a bit of mystery. So we were very pleased to see our friends at RYOT Studio and Digital Catapult bust some of the biggest 5G myths.

The fact is, 5G is not a far-off pipe dream. It’s not just over the horizon. It’s already here. As Emily Savage says in the video, many forward-thinking organisations companies are already moving ahead with 5G (for example, Digital Catapult is in the midst of trials and is offering support to local government to deliver 5G rollout plans).

One of the reasons we are so enthusiastic is that Igloo has already felt the force of 5G and the amazing streaming capabilities it offers. Last year, we worked with Optus, one of Australia’s largest Telcos, to give the Australian public its first chance to experience 5G. Working with Staples VR, we streamed Commonwealth swimming events live into the dome in 360°. Optus’s 5G network and fibre technology made it possible to stream in 4K and 8K - a truly impressive feat.

The Commonwealth Games streamed into an Igloo dome.

But it’s not just about live-streaming. Downloading a movie will take seconds, and virtual and augmented reality will leap forward as processing is offloaded into the cloud. At Igloo, we picture a future where Shared VR content is stored in the cloud, accessed within seconds, and streamed directly into the immersive space. Clients will access their content with ease. 360° conference calls held in Igloos will stream so smoothly that it’ll be as if your colleagues are there - instead of the other side of the world.

We hope your mind is now whirring with the possibilities. If you’re looking for more inspiration, we’d suggest you read Tech Radar’s roundup of everything you need to know. And as ever, if you see potential for an Igloo to create value in your business, do get in touch.
